‘Tis the season for new resolutions. But will 2026 be the year of resolve?

It seems that folks’ resolutions tend to be focused on big changes or accomplishments, but the joy of the coming year is in the smallest of them.

Resolutions are more than simply goals for the year. They usually include specific actions to take, such as exercise more, spend less, invest better, read every day, start a new hobby, refine an old skill, and so on. There is usually some specificity to the goals, such as lose 20 pounds, exercise five hours per week and other quantifiable elements that make for SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound). There seems to be a trend nowadays to encourage folks to declare “Big Hairy Audacious Goals.” (I think I am going to scream the next time I hear that ridiculous phrase that is supposedly inspiring.)

Instead of measuring progress on massive goals, perhaps we should be relishing the moments we find ourselves in. That is not to say that we should not have goals, plans, dreams and objectives, but we should not lose the moments of living along the way.

Advice abounds on how to improve one’s focus: sticky notes of affirmations on mirrors, journals to track progress, peers or mentors as accountability partners…the list is endless. Our moments are not. Our senses bring our attention to the moment: the scent of BBQ on the grill, the sound of wind in the trees, the sight of a loved one’s smile, the taste of a freshly made cookie, the feel of tears of joy or sadness running down our cheeks. Our senses provide us connections to every moment.

All resolutions require resolve, that is, the decision to commit to action. While this applies to our significant goals, it also applies to our moments. Commit to relishing the moments for all the potential, senses and joy to be found in them.

Happy New Year, everyone. May you find joy in your moments.
