As a kid, I enjoyed going to Astroworld, Houston’s amusement park, a few times. It was pricey for a kid, even before it became part of the Six Flags family of venues. It was new and exciting, even in its early days. One of my favorite rides, because I was no daredevil type, was the chance to drive a car around a course. I was 12 and the chance to drive was exciting, and I knew that neither I nor the other drivers could cause damage or harm because something very simple kept everyone on the right path. Sometimes the simplest things can keep us on track.

The solution for the ride was a vertical metal band that was a few inches high and ran through the center line of the course. The vehicles were dubbed Antique Taxis, underpowered and with fully functional governor to assure a low-speed “top end.” Sometimes life provides guides to keep us on track. Decades ago, Josie, a fellow parishioner, said something to me that I frequently refer to in hope of staying on the path I should be on.

“Joy is your ministry.”  I can tell you where we were standing at the back of the church when she said it. In the moment, I was pleased with her observation, but over time I have referred to it as a guide and a governor. Her four words serve as a reminder of what I am called to do.

I wish that I was more consistent in delivering on her observation that serves as a challenge for me to meet. I have mixed success, but it is not something that can be done by will. Only by grace does joy exist in one’s heart.

Never underestimate what you say to others, nor devalue sincere comments shared with you. You may miss what you need to keep your bearings.
